We Need Mythic Consciousness

When we do not properly understand but merely reject the mythic consciousness, we deprive ourselves of the possibility of psychic and social integration. The mythic consciousness is as necessary as the mental consciousness . . . We can ignore these structures at our own peril.

— Georg Feuerstein

When we cast aside the Mythic, dismissing it as outdated or irrelevant, we risk losing a vital way of seeing—one that perceives the world as alive with profound meaning, far greater than we can ever fully understand, much less control.

Mythic consciousness is not a relic of past peoples or forgotten eras, but a way of encountering truth through symbols, patterns, archetypes, and stories—an approach that connects us to the deep, pulsing undercurrent of Life. It recognizes a river as more than mere water flowing downhill—it becomes a bearer of wisdom, a mirror for transformation, a reminder of cycles: the outward journey into the Great Unknown and the Sacred Return.

Without this way of seeing, the world grows thin—a surface without roots, easily swept away in chaos. We are left adrift, with a longing for Belonging that feels vast and nearly impossible to navigate.

To live solely through the rational mind is to risk a kind of spiritual starvation—an isolation from the layers of reality that truly nourish us: the deeply felt, the nonrational. The Mythic is not in opposition to reason; it is the very ground from which all meaningful clarity and understanding arise. It grounds us in something older, wilder, and more interconnected than we often dare to acknowledge.

When we sever ourselves from the deep, essential patterning of Myth, we not only fray at the edges but lose the very means to heal and mend. The invitation is clear: to remember, to reclaim, and to courageously open ourselves to the unseen flows and forces of Creation—allowing them to weave us back into the whole, restoring a real, rooted sense of Becoming and Belonging.
